MEDIA RELEASE: Acquisition brings one of Australia’s leading specialist renewable energy consultancies into AESG, alongside the appointment of highly experienced industry leader Andrew Mather to lead the firm’s next phase of growth in Australia
AESG, a leading global engineering, consultancy and advisory firm, has announced the acquisition of The Energy Project (TEP), a specialist Australian energy consultancy with more than a decade of experience at the forefront of the country’s transition to renewable and distributed energy.
Alongside the acquisition, AESG has appointed Andrew Mather as fractional managing director of its Australian business, bringing one of the engineering consultancy sector’s most experienced business leaders into the firm as AESG continues to expand its international platform.
The acquisition represents a significant addition of renewable energy capabilities to AESG’s global sustainability and engineering portfolio.
TEP has established itself as a highly regarded independent energy consultancy, advising major corporations, utilities, airports, governments and institutions on energy transition strategies and the development and delivery of distributed energy projects including onsite solar, battery storage, microgrids, and electric vehicle infrastructure. The firm has worked with organisations including Stockland, Dexus, Charter Hall, Sydney and Adelaide Airports, Bunnings, Linfox and IKEA.
Headquartered in South Australia, TEP has developed its expertise within one of the world’s most advanced clean energy environments. The state has one of the highest penetrations of distributed renewables globally which has led to the innovation of increasingly sophisticated approaches to managing energy storage, grid integration and management.
TEP and its leadership have been active participants in that transition. Their work has included the specification, procurement and owners engineering of major solar and battery projects, the scaling up of one of the world’s first virtual power plants, and the delivery of one of Australia’s first major EV truck charging facilities.
Co-founder Patrick Greene has also served on SA Power Networks’ distributed energy integration and connections working groups and has led TEP’s involvement in a number of ARENA-backed initiatives.
In addition to providing distributed energy advice, The Energy Project is one of Australia’s leading independent experts on electrical embedded networks. The company advises several of the country’s largest operators of embedded networks on their regulatory and compliance obligations and provides technical and commercial advice on the establishment and operation of EN’s.
Saeed Al Abbar, chief executive officer of AESG, said:
“Our approach to growth has always been focused on quality — building and acquiring specialist capabilities that we believe can genuinely strengthen AESG and create value for our clients globally. The Energy Project is exactly that. They have built an exceptional business in one of the world’s most advanced renewable energy markets, with a depth of technical and commercial expertise that is difficult to replicate.
“South Australia has become an important global reference point for what is possible as renewable generation, storage and distributed energy become an increasingly significant part of the energy system. TEP has been part of that journey, working at the interface between technology, infrastructure and commercial reality. Bringing that expertise into AESG gives us an exceptional platform from which to apply those lessons internationally, including across the rapidly evolving energy landscape of the Middle East.
“At the same time, bringing someone of Andrew’s calibre into AESG to lead our Australian business is a significant step for us. His experience building and leading major international consulting businesses will be invaluable as we continue to grow our platform in Australia and connect that expertise with our clients and teams across the Middle East and internationally.”
TEP’s track record includes solar projects at Adelaide Airport, major solar feasibility and development work for Sydney Airport, solar and battery infrastructure for water utilities, DC fast-charging infrastructure for Linfox’s truck operations, and major commercial energy programmes for organisations including Bunnings and Stockland.
The acquisition will see TEP form the renewable energy pillar within AESG’s broader consultancy practice, complementing the firm’s established expertise across sustainability, environmental consultancy, building services, electrical infrastructure, cost management and commissioning.
This will enable expertise developed in the Australian market to be deployed across AESG’s international network, while also connecting the Australian business to the wider capabilities of the Group.
TEP co-founder Patrick Greene will continue to play a leading role in the business within AESG. With three decades of experience across the technology and renewable energy sectors, Greene has extensive experience spanning solar, battery storage, microgrids, virtual power plants, energy policy and project delivery. His work has included specifying, procuring and delivering energy solutions for major commercial, institutional and industrial organisations.
Patrick Greene, co-founder of The Energy Project, said:
“Over the past decade, The Energy Project has become a trusted partner to many of Australia’s leading companies as they navigate the energy transition. This trust has been earned by consistently delivering technically rigorous and commercially sound advice while maintaining our independence in the market.
“Joining AESG is a natural next step for our business. We share a strong commitment to technical excellence and client outcomes, while AESG brings a much broader international platform and complementary expertise. This acquisition allows us to invest in strengthening our local offering, while at the same time creating opportunities for us to apply the lessons of the Australian energy transition to a global client base.”
The appointment of Andrew Mather as fractional managing director, Australia, will support the next stage of AESG’s development in the market. Mather brings more than four decades of experience across the engineering and construction sector, including extensive C-suite leadership within global engineering consultancies.
His career has included responsibility for consulting businesses across multiple international markets, building an Australian operation for a global consultancy to more than 150 people within two years, and leading 17 acquisitions across six countries.
Mather will oversee AESG’s Australian business, including the integration of TEP, the continued development of AESG’s existing buildings offering, and the expansion of the firm’s specialist capabilities in the market.
He will also focus on strengthening the two-way connection between Australia and AESG’s international operations, bringing Australian expertise to global clients while creating greater access to AESG’s wider capabilities for clients in Australia.
Andrew Mather, fractional managing director, Australia at AESG, said:
“AESG has built an impressive international consultancy by combining technical excellence with an entrepreneurial approach to growth. TEP is an excellent example of the type of specialist business that can make that platform even stronger.
“TEP brings deep technical expertise, an outstanding track record and an independent, commercially focused approach to energy consultancy. AESG brings complementary multidisciplinary capability, international reach and the scale to take that expertise into new markets. My focus will be on bringing those strengths together, continuing to build the Australian business and creating a genuinely two-way flow of expertise and opportunity between Australia and AESG’s international network.”
For the Middle East, the acquisition provides AESG with access to specialist expertise developed in a market already dealing with many of the technical challenges that become increasingly important as renewable generation and storage scale. TEP’s experience spans the full lifecycle from energy strategy and techno-economic modelling through specification, procurement and delivery — complementing AESG’s established position in sustainability and multidisciplinary engineering across the region.
The acquisition and leadership appointment form part of AESG’s continued international expansion and its strategy of combining organic growth with selective investment in specialist businesses and senior industry talent that strengthen the Group’s capabilities across its global markets.
