NettZero’s longevity lies in its ability to anticipate and respond to the evolving sustainability demands, staying ahead of industry shifts, and delivering practical high-impact solutions for clients.
From decarbonisation strategy to science-based target setting, renewable energy solutions, and carbon offset certificates, the sustainability landscape is dynamic and ever changing. NettZero thrives in this space, bringing nearly two decades of industry experience and a proven track record across diverse sectors, including the built environment, professional services, manufacturing, mining, and advisory.
Founded as a NABERS ratings firm 18 years ago by Matt Greening, NettZero has since expanded into a full-scale sustainability consultancy. The company now operates out of offices in Brisbane and Sydney, with additional staff in Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth, serving their national client base.
Long before sustainability reporting became standard practice, NettZero was already cutting its teeth in what was then a small corner of the business reporting landscape. When NABERS emerged in 2010 as a new measurement tool, Matt recognised its potential and positioned the company as a leader in environmental performance assessment. Today, the team conducts over 600 NABERS assessments annually, a core service that has driven NettZero’s continued growth and influence.
The company’s trajectory has mirrored broader shifts in the Australian sustainability market, with demand for sustainability services expanding far beyond property owners to organisations of all kinds seeking to measure, manage, and enhance their environmental impact.
“We’ve seen a shift from working solely with building owners to partnering with a wide range of businesses looking to strengthen their sustainability performance,” says Zach Greening, marketing and sales manager.
This shift has led NettZero to broaden its service offerings. In addition to its leadership in NABERS assessments, the company provides expertise in greenhouse gas reporting, science-based target setting, decarbonisation strategy, and carbon offset procurement. “Our ability to stay at the ahead of new developments, whether that’s decarbonisation strategies, digital emissions reporting, or responding to new regulatory requirements, is what has kept us relevant,” Zach explains.

A key driver of NettZero’s growth is its ability to integrate sustainability into broader business strategies. “Sustainability isn’t just an add-on, it needs to be embedded within business strategy to ensure long-term resilience,” says Marita Mewett, NettZero’s director of ESG.
“Our clients aren’t just thinking about meeting compliance requirements today, they’re looking at their long-term risk profile and future-proofing their operations for the next five, ten, and twenty years.”
As part of its expansion, NettZero has strengthened its capabilities in carbon markets, securing the required financial services licence to facilitate transactions in Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).
This move enables NettZero’s clients to navigate carbon markets with confidence and fully participate in various carbon neutrality programs, resulting in a one-stop shop approach to sustainability service offerings.
Technology also plays a critical role in the company’s future. NettZero has developed its own suite of digital tools that streamline both NABERS and general emissions reporting with minimal manual intervention while maintaining a high degree of accuracy.
The company has structured its services into two key business units: NettZero Buildings, focused on NABERS assessments Greenstar Performance, and built-environment consultation; and NettZero Carbon, specialising in carbon and ESG advisory.
With a strong and growing client base, NettZero is leveraging its expertise to drive impact across a broad range of industries. “Our focus is on delivering sustainability solutions that empower businesses to achieve their goals efficiently and effectively,” says Matt. “By combining our experience, expertise, and technology we’re positioning NettZero as a leader in the corporate sustainability space”.
